Alex Hayes is like most teenagers. She loves Halloween, and wants to enjoy the day with her friends. However, Alex has a rare genetic disorder that confines her to a wheelchair for mobility. Her situation makes it difficult to wear a costume for Halloween.
Fortunately, Alex is going to have a special Halloween this year thanks to some students from Virginal Commonwealth School of Medicine. The medical students spoke with Alex and learned of her love for farm animals. The students began to build a barn that would fit over Alex’s chair. Alex’s grandfather dressed up as Old McDonald and helped to wheel Alex to her Party. As Alex made her debut, it was clear to see that she was so excited to have such a special costume.
These medical students will one day help Alex with her medical complications. Today they have helped her experience a Halloween celebration with her friends, and kept her from feeling excluded because of her disorder.
The hard work of these students has helped to make for a special time for Alex. Their work made a big difference in Alex’s life. They have also reminded me that we all have the ability to be a blessing for others. What we do matters. When we listen to the needs of others around us and are willing to use our skills to help their situation we can truly be a blessing.
