“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – Acts 20:35
The opportunity to love our neighbors is right in front of us. We must keep our eyes open and when the opportunity presents itself, we must respond in love. Love compels us to help those who are in need. Love opens our eyes and our hearts to the needs of others. Love gives us the strength to help others.
Recently, Sophia Furtado was faced with a difficult situation. Sophia is a driver for DoorDash. DoorDash is a company that delivers restaurant meals to homes. She responded to a delivery request from Caryn Sullivan. Caryn ordered a late dinner. She wanted pizza and Sophia was in route with her food. It was a nice spring night, so Caryn decided she would wait outside of her home for the delivery.
While waiting in the driveway, Caryn had an accident. She recently had a knee replacement that failed. Caryn fell and hit her head. When Sophia arrived with the food delivery, she noticed Caryn lying in the dark. Caryn was unresponsive. Without hesitation, Sophia raced to Caryn and began to offer aid. Sophia screamed at the top of her lungs for help. She woke several people who called for EMTs. Sophia stayed with Caryn until the ambulance arrived.
Thankfully, Caryn will recover. Her injury was significant and kept her in the hospital for several weeks. During that time, Sophia visited Caryn in the hospital and now the two have become friends. Caryn refers to Sophia as her “guardian angel.” It is a friendship that has come to life because Sophia responded in love to Caryn’s needs.
Sophia’s actions are what love looks like. Sophia set aside her own schedule. She did all she could to respond to Caryn’s needs. Because of Sophia’s actions, Caryn has a future. Love responds to our neighbor’s needs. Love sacrifices so that others may live their life to the fullest. The world needs more people like Sophia. The world needs us to act in love.
