Monday night was an exciting night in Oklahoma City. I’m sure many of you were watching the NBA Awards show to see Russell Westbrook be named the Most Valuable Player for the 2016-2017 season. Russell gave a very emotional speech expressing gratitude to God and all of his family who helped make it possible to do what he did this last year in basketball. It was a great moment for Russell, the Thunder, and all of Oklahoma City.
Most people know Russell for his incredible basketball skills, his unbelievable athleticism, and his tenacity on the basketball court, but what I really love about Russell is the work that he does off the court. In 2012, Russell started the “Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation”. As Russell and his brother were growing up, if someone told them they couldn’t do something, they were taught to ask “Why not?”. It was a way of teaching them to dream dreams, persevere, and never give up on your goals, even if others tell you it’s not possible. The foundation works to help instill this same kind of dreaming and perseverance in kids today.
I think this is exactly the kind of attitude God wants for us. God wants us to always dream new dreams and follow after those dreams with everything we’ve got. Are you chasing after your dreams today? Why not? After all, it’s Casual Friday.
