When Bob and I started our new church right out of seminary, we had never worked so hard, yet felt more fulfilled in our calling. Everything was new, every season brought opportunities to do something for the first time. We poured ourselves into this church, and at times we were exhausted. The song, Love Grows Here, became part of the DNA at our young church as we found our way together. This song is special to our family, woven into many of our significant family events. It inspires me and helps center me when I become tired or discouraged. Such truth is spoken through these beautiful lyrics and I am privileged to share these words with you:
Take a look around you, tell me what you see. People here to worship the Lord, just like you and me. Some have come in gladness; some have come with fear. But, all have come because they know that love grows here. Yes, love grows here, and all of us can share the wonder and joy that it can bring. For God is near, teaching us to care and showing our hearts how to sing.
Some of us are lonely, some have many friends, some lives just beginning, some are near the end. Yet, we come together, knowing He is near. Once again reminding us that love grows here. Yes, love grows here, and all of us can share the wonder and joy that it can bring. For God is near, teaching us to care and showing our hearts how to sing. Yes, love grows here, yes love grows here.
I cannot imagine what Advent would be like without belonging to a family of faith. I love St. Luke’s and I have never been more proud to be your first lady. My eyes fill with tears as I reflect over the last few months and all that has been happening at each one of our campuses, for there I “see” countless examples of God’s love in action wherever I turn. When God dwells in faith communities, so does His faithful love for His people. Together, we are His faithful community and together we have experienced the richness of His blessings.
I was born into a family where church was at the forefront of our lives, but during this Advent season, many people will walk through our doors who may not know that familiar feeling of your smile, your welcome, your love as you extend the love of Christ to those you encounter. I encourage you to take the time to look around at those who make up our church and truly see the wonders of God’s love at work through you. I am blessed by each one of you. May you experience the gift of Christ’s birth this Advent season, with the assurance that we love because He first loved us!
