“…My cup runneth over.” -Psalm 23:5

It is summertime. It is hot in Oklahoma. My family and I enjoy going for a walk in the evenings. The past few weeks, our walks have been starting later and later. We are trying to avoid the heat as much as possible.

Deaubrey Philson has a long daily walk, but for an entirely different reason. Deaubrey works at the Hardee’s restaurant several miles from where he lives. Each day, he walks, regardless of the temperature, to work his shift. Rain or shine, hot or cold, Deaubrey works hard and travels a long way to provide for his family.

Shane Woodard is a Hardee’s customer. Shane was driving down the highway when he saw Deaubrey walking in his work clothes. Shane thought, “Surely this guy is not walking to Hardee’s. When Shane realized that Deaubrey walked to work every day, he felt compelled to do something about it. Shane went to the store and then made his way to Hardee’s.

That day, Deaubrey worked a long, hard shift. When he walked out of the restaurant that day, he found a brand-new bicycle waiting for him. It was a blessing that made his daily work burden just a little lighter.

Deaubrey and Shane have become friends since that day. Their friendship is a remarkable testimony to what kindness can accomplish. When asked by the local news about the gift, Deaubrey Philson said, “I thank God for the act of kindness.” It reminded him and all of us that there are good people in this world.

The faithful life of kindness begins by listening to God’s Spirit around us. There is no doubt that it was the gentle whisper of God that Shane Woodard heard that day as he drove down that highway. He saw a person in need and knew he could make a difference. Each of us can live a life of kindness and mercy. When we see a need, let us be prepared to be generous with our time and gifts. When God provides that gentle nudge, let us respond with prayers and actions that will bless our neighbors.
