“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ…” -Philippians 1:27
Tammy Waddell is an elementary school teacher. She has worked in the Georgia Public Schools for several decades. Tammy loved her students and dedicated her time and energy to “Her kid.” Sadly, Tammy has had a long battle with cancer, and just this past month, she passed away at the age of 58. Her loss was felt by her family, friends, colleagues, and students.
Just two weeks before her death, Tammy discussed her funeral plans with her son. Tammy, who had dedicated her life to serving her students, also wanted to serve others in death. She told her son that she didn’t want flowers at her funeral. Instead, she requested that people bring backpacks full of school supplies to help students.
The day of Tammy’s funeral arrived, and her wish was fulfilled. Backpacks lined the pews and chancel rail of her church, filled with all the supplies that would help students succeed. The teachers of her district served as honorary pallbearers. They did not take Tammy to her final resting place; rather, they carried the 150 backpacks back to the school in Tammy’s honor.
When the story of Tammy’s funeral began to be shared on news sites and social media, Tes Resources learned about Tammy’s wish to support the students. This non-profit stepped up to help and honor Tammy’s life of service. They donated thousands of school supplies to the school Tammy had served for so long.
We are called to a life of service. The greatest blessings come from giving our time and resources to help others succeed. Tammy Waddell lived a life that blessed so many, and even in death, she showed others how to live. Kindness, generosity, and service are the marks of the life God has called us to live. Caring for others is how we demonstrate the love of God. Giving our time and resources allow us bring hope to the world.
