“Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.” -Romans 15:2

Tamie Konzier and her young son were out running errands one day. They stopped off at a small restaurant for lunch. They were enjoying their lunch together. They had a wonderful waitress who helped make the experience all the more enjoyable. While they were eating, Tamie noticed that her waitress was having a difficult time walking. She then overheard her waitress telling another person that her back was constantly hurting, but her social security was not enough.

The waitress, Betty, is 81 years old. She would like to retire, but she is unable to. Tamie Konzier was moved by Betty’s struggle and decided to do something to help. First, she reached into her purse and pulled out what cash she had. She gave Betty a $40 tip. Tamie decided she also needed to do more. She took out her phone and made a quick video. She posted it to social media with the opening line, “If I can make one video go viral, let it be this one.” She posted this video with the hopes of offering a little help for Betty. The community responded!

It did not take long for word to spread about Betty. It only took 24 hours to gather so many people who were interested that Tamie had to open a GoFundMe account. The account grew and grew. Once the fund grew to $140,000.00, Tamie met with Betty. Betty was shocked! She told Tamie that her family was having financial troubles. She was overwhelmed by Tamie and the community’s kindness.

At that meeting with Betty, another video was made. People wanted to help even more. The fund continued to grow. Eventually, Tamie had to hire an attorney to help manage the funds. She wanted to bless Betty. When it was all said and done, Betty was presented $328,739.18. It is a life-changing sum of money. More than that, Betty and Tamie witnessed an incredible act of kindness.

We can make a difference when our actions are motivated by a love for God and our neighbor. Tamie Konzier was so happy to give Betty a chance to comfortably live the rest of her life. Tamie would say, “It goes to show any one of us could look at another human being and, through a simple selfless act, change their lives for the better.” When we see a need, let us pray that God will lead us to bless our neighbor. Our simple, selfless acts of kindness can go a long way to share God’s love and bring hope to all.
