In the musical Six, Jane Seymour sings an incredibly moving and emotional song called “Heart of Stone” that depicts her deep love for King Henry, while also revealing her insecurities and struggles in their marriage.  The lyrics of the chorus say “You can build me up, you can tear me down, you can try but I’m unbreakable. You can do your best, but I’ll stand the test, you’ll find that I’m unshakeable.” These are the words of someone who is devoted, but also internally strong and knows her purpose through any uncertainty. This is the type of resolve I wish I had for God constantly: completely devoted, and yet no matter what life throws in my direction, I am truly unshakeable in my purpose and my calling. What I would not give to be unwavering in my faith and to be madly in love with God no matter my circumstance. Right now, I am about a month away from welcoming our new little girl into our family, but whether it is expectations, or just general circumstances of life, I cannot escape the worry that I feel at every turn. This feeling keeps me as far away from God as a person can be at times because I am completely consumed with needing to gain back control.

The thing that brings me back to God in these moments can change per season. Investing in my community, reading scripture, listening to worship music, focusing on connection in my marriage, journaling… any of these acts can remind me of the love and faith and strength that I have in Christ when I am needing to find that love for God again.

One thing I told one of our Poteet students this past week in camp was to remind themselves of “facts” when they start to worry, panic, or get too overwhelmed. Well, this translates perfectly to getting ourselves back to action, remind ourselves of the truth of who God is, and give our hearts the jumpstart it needs to feel revitalized in our love for God. We never lose God. He is never anything but close to our hearts, all it takes is one bold step in the direction of faith.
