“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” –Philippians 2:3-4
It is very important for me to show God’s love. I have found the best way for me to show God’s love is by developing a friendship with new people. God has always blessed me by listening to me, and he has also placed others in my life to hear me out. I’m very fortunate to have good listeners in my life. Because of that example, I do my best to listen to others.
Just a few days ago a couple came into the church. One of their family members was in the hospital. The couple came to Threefold, the St. Luke’s coffee and bookstore, to get coffee so they could stay awake. It was obvious that they were very tired. I was fortunate enough to have a few moments to talk with them while I made their drinks. The couple told me about their family member, and the seriousness of their health. At the end of our conversation they asked me to pray for them. Of course, I said yes. I was blessed that they asked me pray with them. When someone asks us to pray it is an invitation to join in their struggle. It’s an honor for me to pray for others. To join with others and to carry their burdens to God in pray is a special blessing and privilege of Christians.
I am so happy to say that this couple, my new friends, come back to Threefold to give me updates. Their family member is getting better and we are all thankful for that. Little does this couple know, but every time they come into Threefold they are impacting my life. They took the time out of their busy day to let me know about their day. They blessed me by making me apart of their lives. I get to see God working in their lives.
By developing a friendship, and listening to others we have the opportunity to be supportive in the life of others. God did not intend for us to live this life alone, we are in this together. I hope you will take time today to make a new friend, look around for that person who needs a kind word or a caring prayer. You never know what difference you will make or what difference they will make in your life.
