Free day – on Friday, we take a little time for ourselves and engage in some of the local activities the island has to offer. Tourism being there biggest employer and income on the island, we like to contribute where we can. Five of the team members took the opportunity to take Steel Pan […]
Our plans for Thursday were a little different than the previous work days had been. Today we woke up and spent our morning sorting dirt and debris from the beans, so they could be cooked, cooked rice and grilled 250 pork chops. We cooked all the food at the house and transported it all […]
We arrived Wednesday having only a few more projects on the list and most of us thinking we’d finish up early. We began putting up the final pieces to finish the back staircase and then it was stained. Several of us where busy painting the front porch, but Mrs. Elva was really concerned […]
Before After Tuesday, we woke up and arrived at Mrs. Elva’s eager to get started on the back staircase. We arrived, and the island was experiencing a power outage at the time, which is common, so we weren’t able to use our power tools to cut the wood for the handrail. We did a […]
We arrived on our first day of work and immediately began tearing off the old, rusty metal roof from Mrs. Elva’s laundry shed – this consisted of three people thrusting a wooden pillar into the roof from below and a couple of guys on top and along the side removing what nails […]
Sunday morning, we attended Bethesda Methodist church in Flower’s Bay. Some of the first-timers on the trip were a little concerned after hearing that the service could last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours and the church didn’t have an air conditioner; however, the church is located right along the beach and had all […]
Travel day – day one started with a 4 a.m. airport arrival time and a prank call from a team member informing me that he was stuck in Guthrie – he was not, but he managed to initiate a little bit of panic. Other than that, our flights were all on time and all 10 […]
We enjoyed a wonderful visit with the folks at the retirement home St. Luke’s church today and we’re delighted that one of the ladies who is 91 was back for her first time since she broke her leg.
Several of the people told their life stories and it was good to see familiar faces and new friends. We sang and prayed together.
16 people gathered for a retreat on Tuesday Jan. 2 – Wednesday Jan. 3
We ranged in age from 6 to 70’s. The scripture basis for the retreat was the story of the wise and foolish bridesmaids in Matthew 25:1-13. We had several intense times of study and sharing. It was great to hear how people wanted to be ready for God to come into their lives and were daily preparing for His coming. We considered what spiritual gifts we have and those we would like to cultivate and grow. We also enjoyed a wonderful marinated chicken dinner grilled outside our cabin by Pastor Nadya ‘s husband Stas. Several of the women had brought food and we really had a feast.
We walked in the snow and looked at the stars. Our evening prayer service…
Today the group was able to go to a Russian Mall to do a little shopping, then they were off to a overnight camp with members from the church. Without wifi and a busy schedule we have not heard much more about their trip today other than they are having fun. Hopefully we will get a full report and post it soon.
