“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone would open, I will come in and sup with them and they with me.” -Revelation 3:20

It’s the promise of Jesus, to come and knock at the door of our hearts, no matter how far away we may feel, no matter how lonely or how dark the night. If we open the door, He comes in to be with us. God loves us enough that He comes to knock at the door of our hearts to serve us.

On the night of the Last Supper, as they were preparing for dinner, Jesus took off his outer robe and got a towel around his arm and a basin of water and went around washing the disciples’ feet. He wasn’t raising the dead, feeding 5,000 or curing the sick; He was washing their feet. He was doing something to be kind. In Jesus; day, you walked the roads and they were dusty; you wore sandals that were open-toed; your feet sweat and the dirt stuck on your feet. When you settle down for dinner, it’s nice to wash the dirt off your feet because it feels good! (And smells better, too!) Jesus was sensitive to the feeling and needs of others and taking the time to wash their feet was a special way of letting them know they were special to Him. It was a way to demonstrate how deep His love is. I can just imagine him saying, “Do you understand how much I love you? I am willing to wash your feet.”

After washing each of the disciples’ feet, he took the bread and broke it, saying “Do you understand this is my body that is broken for you.” He took the cup and said, “This is my blood that is shed for you.” it was a night about trying to say, “Do you understand how much God cares?” God comes no matter how far away or lonely you feel. We can go to God with a sense of confidence when we ask God to give us strength and guidance in our lives.

Jesus wanted the message to be clear that He loved the disciples and He said you call me “Lord” and “Teacher” and so I am. If I am your Lord and Teacher and I have washed your feet, I’m asking you to do the same for others. I have given you an example. Each day choose to do something kind for those who are around you!
