Broadway Sermon Series_2016_600What is it about Broadway that excites our minds and touches our hearts? The music? The dancing?

Sometimes a story is so powerful, we can see ourselves in the characters. We share their joy. We understand their pain. In the end, we are inspired.

You will be too – through guest performers and meaningful messages – as we experience some of the most memorable musicals ever written during St. Luke’s On Broadway.

It all starts July 24 with Evita, capturing the complex struggles of Eva Peron’s life. She achieved power in Argentina after marrying the country’s president, and though she professed her love for the people, skeptics accuse her of using them for personal gain. But we don’t have to wait until we’re considered ‘perfect’ before we can make a difference in the world.

On July 31, we experience The King and I. In this classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, a British schoolteacher moves halfway around the world to teach the king of Siam’s family. Both Anna and the King struggle with their cultural differences, but in the end, both are able to see beauty in the other.

August 7 will feature a story made famous by the voice of Robin Williams, Aladdin. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to get ahead in life – unless it causes you to compromise your values.  In Aladdin, the main character pretends to be something he’s not in order to find love, and exploits his friendship with the Genie.  At the end of a struggle between good and evil, he eventually discovers the virtues of being himself, and is able to see that kindness is what can truly get you ahead in life.

Taking center stage on August 14 is Man of La Mancha. Do you ever daydream you’re a hero, fighting the evils of the world? That’s what the character Don Quixote does in this brilliant musical. While his adventures seem eccentric and comical, his heart is in the right place. But you and I don’t have to fight the world’s battles on our own. Our kindness can change the world – one person at a time.

On August 21, it’s the story of love in paradise – South Pacific. Love may be blind, but sometimes there are strings attached. In this beautiful Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, South Pacific features an American nurse stationed on an island during World War II. She falls in love with a French plantation owner, but struggles to accept him being a widower with mixed-race children. But we can love one another without hesitation, because we know God’s love is endless and unconditional.

We finish with Mary Poppins on August 28. Sometimes a dysfunctional family needs a fresh outlook on life. When the children of the wealthy and uptight Banks family are out of control, along comes a magical nanny. Mary Poppins uses her unique and sunny style to improve the family’s relationships. Even parents need a new perspective now and then. It’s amazing how the power of kindness can have a ripple effect in the home.
